________________________“From the Dawn of Time we came, moving silently down through the centuries, living many secret lives, struggling to reach the Time of the Gathering, when the few who remain will battle to the last. No one has ever known we were among you, until now.” (The prologue, spoken by Sean Connery as Ramírez)

When you think of things that are typically Scottish, you inevitably think of him...
The kilt with its tartan. The famous Scottish skirt.
The length of the kilt is chosen so that it reaches to the wearer's knees, but does not touch the ground when "kneeling down". According to legend, this is also a way of recognising whether the wearer is married or single. If the knee is clearly visible, you are single; if the knee is covered by the kilt, this is a sign that you are engaged or married.
It is well known that a kilt has no pockets. To carry your personal belongings (ID, keys, etc.), there is the sporran (Scottish for purse). This is a brown or black bag made of fur leather, which is usually worn with a belt on the front.
What does the Scot wear underneath?
This well-kept secret has puzzled generations, probably especially the ladies.
In fact, the rumour that the kilt is not worn underneath is an invention of the Lowlanders, who wanted to distinguish themselves from the "barbaric" Highlanders and have only worn the kilt since the time of Queen Victoria. But the fact is: there was no underwear.
So what did a Highlander do to "swing free"?
Roughly speaking, there were two possibilities. Either the relatively long shirt was tied between the legs, or you wore a special shirt that was longer at the back. This "bib" was pulled through between the legs and fastened at the front with buttons. Today, it is up to the individual to decide whether or not to wear something under the kilt.

I saw a new leg dress, a kilt, in the gem shop and had to have it. Everyone knows "Highlander", a 1986 feature film directed by Russell Mulcahy and starring Christopher Lambert. That's how my new look came about. So travel with me to the Scottish Highlands and enjoy a bit of cosplay with my Highlander today...
