* (Sweden: Midsommar) Midsummer festival is the celebration of the summer solstice. In the Scandinavian countries as well as in the Baltic States, where the nights hardly get dark at this time of year ("White Nights"), the customs are particularly lively.
_____________________________________________
Midsummer is the period of time centered upon the summer solstice, and more specifically the northern European celebrations that accompany the actual solstice or take place on a day between June 19 and June 25 and the preceding evening. The exact dates vary among different cultures. The celebration predates Christianity, and existed under different names and traditions around the world.
In Sweden, the Midsummer is such an important festivity that there have been proposals to make the Midsummer's Eve into the National Day of Sweden, instead of June 6. In Latvia Midsummer festival is National Day of Latvia. In Denmark and Norway, it may also be referred to as St. Hans Day .___________________________________________
________Majstång
On Midsummer's Eve a tree trunk decorated with green leaves is erected, which is called midsommarstång (midsommar pole) or majstång (maypole). Maj here has nothing to do with the month of May, but goes back to the ancient verb maja ("to decorate with flowers"). The pole looks a little different in different regions of the country, and individual places often have their own traditions. The pole is decorated with leaves and flowers and then it is erected, then danced in a circle around it, whereby different game dances are common. One of these dance songs is Små grodorna: it is about frogs and you imitate their movements while dancing.
The girls and women usually wear white or flowery dresses; many also wear their traditional costumes for this special occasion. Some tie wreaths of flowers or birch twigs and put them on for themselves or their children.
(The custom is similar in many ways to the German Maypole erection).
________Eating and Drinking
At midsummer one eats the first young potatoes. They are served together with herring, sour cream, chives, crispbread and cheese. During the meal, many people take one or more glasses of nubbe called schnapps and sing a drinking song like the one below, which is about either drinking the schnapps in one go or not drinking any at all. But oil (beer) is also drunk with it. For dessert there are fresh Swedish strawberries with cream.
________Magical nature
In the past, nature was believed to be magical on the midsummer night (the night between Friday and Saturday). Elves would dance and trolls would stand behind the trees. It was also said that the morning dew could heal sick animals and people. So they collected some dew in a bottle. This dew was also used for baking; it was believed that the bread and rolls would grow big and tasty. Similar things are still practiced today in the Summer Solstice (Litha), which has no connection to Sweden.
________Seven flowers
Unmarried girls pick seven kinds of wild flowers from seven different meadows at night, which they then place under their pillows. Then, according to legend, they are supposed to dream of the one they will marry one day. But they have to be absolutely quiet while picking and the next day they are not allowed to tell anyone who they dreamt of, otherwise the dream will not come true.

The inspiration for this look was Midsummer's Festival, which I have experienced in Lithuania, Sweden and Spain. With new Raven Ceremonial Gown I wanted to do simple summer styling and use the forgotten Verdant weapons.
A white blouse, light silk scarf, a jeans skirt (a few details that look like leaves, I dyed green). Instead of wreath of flowers in hair, just a hint, a flower in hair. With picnic basket as a back item (never used).
This look is a bit similar to my previously posted "The BACKPACK Tourist" style.
In pictures I tried to capture this Midsommar vibe: Collecting flowers, dancing, picnic in the meadow - so have fun with it...
